Using old waste tyres is increasingly seen as a time consuming, dirty and outmoded way to secure silage sheets. As farmers move towards more effective alternatives, such as Secure Covers, they are left with the problem of what to do with thousands of redundant tyres. On-farm disposal is no longer an option and off-farm disposal is extremely expensive.
Thomas & Fontaine Ltd have now developed a low cost environmentally friendly on-farm service which is an ideal solution to the problem. The service uses a mobile tyre baler that can compress 135 whole car tyres into a Secure Block measuring 30"x50"x60" and weighing almost 1 tonne. The service is fast and effective, producing 4-6 blocks per hour.
The Secure Block has no associated environmental risk and has many on-farm uses:-
Replacing aggregate in track construction
Replacing stone in gateway construction
Building retaining walls
Erosion control
Constructing silage clamps
Using this service waste tyres can now be turned into an environmentally friendly construction material on-farm.
The process is considered by the Environment Agency to be a low risk activity, with the tyre bales suitable for use in engineered construction works on farm.
